How these guides are written

Most gear writing exists to sell you something. This does not. There is no shop behind it, no affiliate link inside it, and no brand named anywhere in it, because we have not tested products and a recommendation we cannot stand behind is worth nothing to you. What each page gives you instead is the small number of specifications that genuinely change the result, the features that are there to be sold rather than used, and an honest description of when the cheap version is the right version — which, for most of these categories, is most of the time.

The categories

The one category where the specification really matters

For nearly everything here, the honest advice is to buy the inexpensive version and spend the difference on nothing. Blood pressure monitors are the exception, and it is worth saying loudly: a monitor that has not been independently validated, or one with a cuff that does not fit your arm, produces confidently wrong numbers, and a wrong blood pressure reading is not harmless. If you read one guide here before buying, read that one.

Nothing here is a paid placement, an affiliate link or a tested product review. These are category guides describing what the specifications mean, so you can choose well without being sold to.

Track what the gear is for

A scale, a bottle or a monitor only helps if what it measures ends up somewhere you can see the pattern. TempoLife keeps food, water, steps, sleep and weight in one diary.
